CSA Studio worked with mental performance coach and author Nassim Ebrahimi, PhD and legendary soccer player and coach Derek Phillips to design their new book and workbook — a series of resources to help young athletes with soccer fundamentals and mindset skills needed on and off the field, giving players a structured way to measure growth and build confidence.
Dr. Nassim Ebrahimi is an accomplished higher education leader, researcher, and mental performance coach recognized for her multifaceted contributions. She earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Neurobiology & Physiology and Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, before obtaining her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. With a career spanning academia and consulting, Dr. Ebrahimi has held prominent leadership roles in community colleges, pioneered innovative assessment practices, and translated psychological research into practical tools for personal and professional development. Her expertise lies at the intersection of education, psychology, and performance coaching, making her a sought-after speaker and mentor in both academic and athletic circles.
Derek Phillips grew up with soccer in his blood. His father, Lincoln Phillips, is a legendary goalkeeper and coach, and soccer quickly became more than just a game—it was a way of life. Derek’s dedication and skills took him from his college days playing for the UMBC Retrievers to a professional career that spanned several countries. He played for Maryland Mania and Cocoa Expos in the USL A-League, as well as Derry City FC in Ireland and clubs in Germany like SV Wehen Wiesbaden and TuRU Düsseldorf. He also played for the Virginia Beach Mariners, Chesapeake Dragons, and Shamrock Rovers in Ireland. In addition to his club career, Derek represented the Trinidad and Tobago national team from 2004 to 2005, earning five caps for his country. His international experience gave him valuable insights into the highest levels of competition and teamwork.
After his playing career, Derek became a coach, training hundreds of athletes, some of whom have gone on to play at the highest levels, including national teams. Derek’s proudest moments come from watching young players grow both on and off the field.
“I’m so proud to have worked with these two authors, who have served as dedicated and inspiring mentors to young players, teaching them not only about soccer skills, but life skills,” said project creative director Chrys Sbily.
